Digging My Claws In

This fall I will be doing a mini renovation to our main floor bathroom and can't wait to transform the claw foot tub!! It has been well cared for, refinished in the last 5 years but it needs something special... some colour! I plan to paint the outside in one of my favorite shades of TURQUOISE to compliment the rest of our home. The mini reno will include new lighting, paint, and installing the antique dresser/vanity I have been in the process of refinishing. One day the major reno will include a new white beach pebble floor, wainscoting, crown moulding, possibly some dreamy blue clouds on the ceiling and a cool medicine cabinet built into the wall.

I am sharing a few of my many inspirational photos of gorgeous bathrooms with claw foot tubs and of course a bit of my favorite nautical decor.

Look at the baby blue enamel on the INSIDE!! What a sweet retreat!

This is eye candy like no other! I wouldn't change a thing!

The beach pebble tile... with white grout of course!

What a bright and happy place to start the day!

I ADORE this light fixture from Barn Light Electric and vow to have two!

Can't you just imagine this in a tiny romantic cottage.

YES PLEASE! Outside! On a deck overlooking the sea!

Simple yet soooo elegant! It would feel like your floating on a cloud!

Not a claw foot but the tub details are stunning and look at that drop curtain!

A special place to unwind to the sound of a crackling fire...

Off to have a bath now! Enjoy your day!

Country Store Decor

Not unlike many women I know, I too dream of the day I can have my own little store that reflects my passion, decor sense and style. How much fun it would be to collect beautiful items to adorn the shelves and walls, fabulous old furniture to display my wares and lots of cubbies or drawers filled with unique finds. I definitely have a soft spot for vintage and antique furniture, handmade wares and good old fashion country store decor.

Ohhh the things I would do to a blank space like this!!

I definitely want a space with historic qualities like exposed brick walls!

Beautiful cubby displays - old mail boxes and wooden crates.

Antique cabinets filled with house wares.

A country store feel that invites you to slow down and take a stroll.

Filing drawers and dresser drawers filled with this and that.

A special place for my ever growing antique button collection.

And of course a beautiful antique cash register to complete the experience!

For me the fun part is collecting some of these fantastic pieces now! I have been stashing away things like vintage post cards, antique buttons, ornate picture frames, antique mirrors, and lots other bits and pieces! When the day comes I get to see my dream through to fruition I'll be well on my way to furnishing it!

Feeling a little Coo Coo?

My home is hectic to say the least. My three year old daughter has held on tight to her terrible twos and at three she could turn the most rational person a little insane! To match the mood in our crazy house I recently decided to add a touch of whimsy and symbolism of our life in the hopes that one day I could hand it over to my daughter when her children drove her to the same state of mind! Bring on the cuckoo clock!!

I searched high and low for an antique or retro version I loved and wouldn't break the bank but everything was too ornate or way out of my price range. I turned to the eBay and decided to bid on a reproduction. Solid hand carved wood - perfect! Price tag - less that $100 including shipping!

Once it arrived I immediately pulled it all apart. I'm sorry but hand carved or not this baby was cheesy and cheep!! I took out all the interior components and front cover plates, taking photos along the way so I could remember how to put it all back together.

A little idea of what the hand carved wood looked like before.

The special mini screw driver set I had to buy to take it apart.

After several coats of high gloss Painter's Touch spray paint it was a matter of letting it dry over night. When I woke up in the morning I sprung out of bed and rushed to the garage to gather all the parts and pieces. I looked through the photos I had taken of the disassembly and managed to pull off the reassembly without any problems. Batteries in, switch on and wouldn't you know it! "Cuckoo, Cuckoo"

I literally ran to the dining room with my hammer in hand and bashed a hole in the old plaster wall!! In all my excitement I forgot nails and hammers don't mix well with lath and plaster! Rob reminded me I needed to calm down and get the drill with a nice size screw to do it right! Off I went!

I think I try to cross my eyes in the last few minutes of finishing a project so I don't see too much and am able to see it in it's intended position so I too may be wowed by the outcome. This baby certainly knocked my socks off!! I absolutely love it!! I pulled a chair out and sat there admiring it until my daughter woke up and the fun began! I pressed the button to activate the birdie... she giggled and said "do it again! do it again!" Now every time she hears it chime, no matter where she is in the house, she comes bolting to see the birdie do his coo coo dance!

More than anything this whimsy clock now symbolizes a precious time in our lives. We are all a little coo coo in our own way, our clock just reminds us every hour to smile about it!

The cheesy wooden clock transformed!

I Love the elk head!

I couldn't resist adding a punch or orange to the hands.

No matter how hectic or coo coo a day, remember to smile!

Inspirational Porches

We have been under renovation chaos for the past seven months, most recently the front deck addition. Construction is well under way so I am busy gathering INSPIRATION! While our deck is anything but a porch, we will have a lattice screen on the top to filter the sunlight and I plan to add custom curtains to make it cozier... more like a porch.

I love everything about this porch feature at House of Turquoise.

Soooo sweet! I love the colours of the dresser and mirror.

I dream of the day I too can have a porch swing large enough to sleep on!

The perfect spot for afternoon tea with friends!

Wow... this is one high style porch... if you can even call it that!

I could spend hours lounging here with a glass of wine!

The perfect sea side retreat!

Have a relaxing long week end!

Colourful Day

I'm gathering INSPIRATION for some floral prints and since it was such a colourful day in the garden I decided to grab the camera and take some pictures of what nature has been working so hard on!

Lovely clusters or bright yellow flowers

I love the colour range of Nasturtiums!

My favorite dried flower - Hydrangea!

Suspected weed but soo dainty & pretty!

This one is my favorite annual!

The newest clematis on our privacy screen

Mmmmmm Rosemary amongst edible Pansies!

Another colourful but suspected weed

Look at the textures! I love the round seed ball!

Ahhhhhhhh the daisies!

Thyme is so dainty but loves to be stepped on!

Couldn't leave our beautiful kitty out of the photo shoot!

Hope you had a bright and cheery day!

Rainy Day Garden Party

Planning our daughter's 3rd Birthday was exciting for me. I wanted it to be a day she would never forget, filled with friends and family. I was inspired by the spring blooms and decided on a garden party in our back yard so there was lots of room for our large family to spread out.

I started gathering supplies early, created some simple centerpieces with pansies, plastic buckets from the dollar store and wooden garden bugs. I painted and planted three weeks ahead so they would fill in by the party. For the buffet table I painted four small wood pots, hot glued a shish kabob stick in each one, filled them with tissue paper and on the day of the party, would tape the name of the sandwich on the stick.

The sandwiches were a hit!

We prayed for sunshine but planned ahead and arranged for a couple tents. Two days before the party our daughter went with her grandparents so Rob and I could decorate. Rob blew up what seemed like a thousand balloons! The plan was to create a canopy made of green yarn with balloons, butterflies & dragonflies clipped on with cloths pegs. A magical sight for little eyes!

It became clear the day before the party that it was not going to happen as planned. Rain Rain Rain!! The outdoor garden party was going to have to take place indoors! We have a character home, the kind with lots of original details including a poor layout consisting of many rooms. Fitting 40 people in was going to be a challenge but it had to be done and we found a way.

Bright and cheery even on a miserable day!

One game we had planned was Pin the Bee on the Flower. To CREATE the bits and pieces I used a foam board, cut out thin yellow and blue foam for the bees, used a black marker for some simple details, cut out and glued on the flower and voila! A nice alternative to the traditional.

Super simple and lots of fun!

The next game was fishing - outdoors of course. I created some floating butterflies, dragonflies and flowers using styrofoam shapes, acrylic paint, and hot glued a magnet on each one. Thin wooden dowels with a thick plastic string attached were covered in ribbons to CREATE the rod. On the end of the plastic string I hot glued another magnet (I suggest using a strong magnet here because of the suction the water creates with the styrofoam) and wouldn't you know it made for an amazing game the kids truly enjoyed!

The tents came in handy for this one!!

Inside we had the kids table set up for making wings. Glue, glitter, foam bits, felt pens - you name it! I had purchased some thin foam sheets to cut out and CREATE simple shapes of butterflies, dragonflies, beetles and lady bugs (those last two can be the same shape ;). Once the kids had decorated them we hole punched 4 spots in the centre and added string so we could tie on some yarn and they would fit the same way a back pack would. There were kids buzzing all over the house!

Our den transformed into a craft area!!

Last but not least was the garden station where the little ones could plant some vegetables (we grew from seeds 2 month prior) and take them home for their own gardens.

Playing with dirt IN the house was so exciting for them!

I needed enough cake to feed 30 adults and 10 kids so I decided to make it from scratch... all of it. Hello!!! A three tier cake with fondant icing?? What was I thinking??? I've never made fondant before let alone a three tier cake!! It took me a combination of 12 hours over 2 days and nearly drove me to tears!

It all worked out in the end but I still stand firm... never again!!

Her wild hat... that's a whole different story!! Short version - her daddy (my manly man) got down and dirty and did some crafting with me at 1 in the morning! It was a hoot! Most importantly - she ADORED it!!

Birthday girl & Rob... my two biggest loves!

A final note about her party. It didn't matter that we were packed in like sardines, that it rained or that some friends couldn't make it. Our house was filled with so much love and laughter it was an amazing special day for a very special little girl!
